South Korean blogger arrested for destabilizing economy
Blogging can have side effects too and irresponsible blogging might even land you in jail. Those of you who are nerds or geeks – beware what you are blogging!
Park Dae-sung, a from South Korean blogger, was arrested on charges of destabilizing foreign markets by blogging about declining companies. The 31-year old community college graduate used to blog and/or post comments by the penname Minerva on Korean #2 portal Daum and is said to be responsible for spreading rumors. He got attention from fellow borders after predicting the fall of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent movement of the won against other major currencies. Soon his posts began to deal against the Lee Myung-bak Government and the way they handled the economy. His posts clearly undermined the South Korean economy with inaccurate (which many imply as ‘false’) statements on the blog. Coincidently, he was the same blogger who was amongst the first to predict about the global economy meltdown.
The arrest was actually made in January 2009 but the news has caught the international media attention only recently. Prosecutors are pressing a 18-month jail for his online ‘comment’ary.
The arrest triggered yet another round of debate about freedom of speech on the Internet.
